Growing up, I recall my desire for more television shows which featured a family that looked like mine. I was only 10 when I became aware of how different my brown-skinned family looked against the traditional backdrop of white faces on mainstream television shows.
I began to feverously question the color of my skin, the texture of my hair, the clothes I wore, how I talked, against the perfect, yet fictional families who represented the white American Dream—the Tanners, the Taylors, the Camdens.
